We divided into groups to design and build real fire kilns on the outdoor kiln site. This is quite unusual as real fire kilns, allowing reduction firing for instance are unusual in London with it’s smoke free regulations. Our group of 5 built a fast-firing, downdraft, wood-fired kiln. As we couldn’t stay overnight it had to get to temperature beween firing at 09.00 and damping down for the night at 21.00, burning 3 – 4 tons of wood each firing. We only had time to fire twice although we always hoped to have further firings.
